Pittstown, NJ (May 12, 2021) - Hear Her Sports' feminine focused podcast got a dose of equestrian sport this month, when Chilean show jumper Gabriela Reutter joined host Elizabeth Emery to discuss her experiences as an internationally competitive rider. The podcast regularly features long-form intimate profiles of female athletes actively breaking boundaries in their fields, speaking up, and living with power and confidence. During her segment, Reutter spoke passionately about her horses, her sport, the pitfalls, and the strategies she uses to succeed in the show ring, as well as her experiences as a female Chilean show jumping athlete. Click HERE to listen to the full podcast!

Because Hear Her Sports covers a wide range of athletic pursuits, Emery begins the show by bringing the audience up to speed on some commonly used equestrian jargon, including identifying the FEI, jumping heights in feet versus meters, and the types of jumps featured in show jumping. Reutter then goes on to talk about her latest back-to-back wins at the CSI2* level, her heart horse Atticus Diamant (aka Monty), and how she and her trainer Olympian Chris Kappler approach training horses how to jump. A large focus of Reutter's own strategies in training and performance for herself is visualization and being sure to be adaptable and dynamic in the saddle, both mentally and physically.

"[Show jumping] is a sport that requires you to be present and in the moment at all times," said Reutter. "While I plan and prepare and visualize as much as possible, once we are in the ring and jumping riders need to be able to adapt to whatever happens on course. Similarly, we have to have the physical fitness to match that mental agility."

The 25-year-old also states that she made a decision to get stronger and more physically fit, versus just thin, as a part of her training regimen, and discusses how this was a major turning point for her as she comes from a background of dealing with an eating disorder. In addition to training and competing her string of show jumpers, Reutter regularly posts equestrian fitness workout videos that are free to watch and follow along.

Finally, Reutter discusses the business and financial side of riding and training, and how some residual biases in the industry may be limiting female Chileans from pursuing the top of equestrian sport. "For me its a huge puzzle that started when I started really training and riding competitively," she said. "It starts with your first horse and your natural abilities, and in the beginning, like a puzzle, you can really only see the edges or parts of the picture. With years of experience and a great few seasons behind me, I feel like I'm just now seeing the bigger picture and understanding the entire puzzle."

Reutter's passion for equestrian sport began at a young age, and has since taken her to the upper echelons of show jumping. Combining talent, horsemanship, and dedication to her dreams, she rides with the aspiration of representing Chile at the pinnacle of show jumping sport. Born in Santiago, Chile, Gaby began riding at only four years old. At 17, she moved to the United States to pursue a professional show jumping career. Since 2014, she has ridden under the guidance of Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist Chris Kappler, and completed her undergraduate degree in Economics and Business Studies at NYU.

To date, Gaby has multiple top finishes in international FEI classes, from the U25 Grand Prix divisions to victory in an FEI 4-star event. She currently campaigns her two show jumpers, Atticus Diamant (aka Monty) and Maharees Rock (aka Rocky), at the FEI level. Both had excellent results during WEF 2021, including a WEF 1 Grand Prix victory and back-to-back wins in the FEI CSI2-star 1.45M. Read more about Gaby’s horses here. Her international equestrian CV also includes Spruce Meadows, The Hampton Classic, and several junior/young rider South American Games. She and Rocky were in the top 3 in the $30,000 Pilates Rock Grand Prix during WEF 1, and in 2018, Reutter received her certificate of capability for the Pan American Games following a top 3 finish in the FEI 3-star 1.50M Captive One Classic.
